When talking with inmates, addressing content, feeling, and meaning gives you the full picture of what they’re trying to communicate. Content is the actual information they’re sharing—the facts, dates, actions, or requests. Feeling covers the emotions behind their words—the frustration, fear, or anger they might be expressing. Meaning is the underlying need or intent behind the message—the reason they’re bringing it up and what outcome they’re seeking. Responding to all three shows you’ve truly heard them and helps you respond in a way that is clear and supportive.

A practical way this works is to paraphrase the content to confirm you heard the facts, acknowledge the feeling to validate their emotions, and address the meaning by identifying the underlying need or request. For example, if an inmate says they’ve been waiting a long time for a property item, you might reflect the facts, acknowledge the frustration, and connect to the underlying need: “You’re waiting for your property to be released—that’s frustrating. It sounds like you want a clear timeline or a quicker resolution. I’ll check the status and let you know what to expect next.” This approach reduces miscommunication, diffuses tension, and guides the conversation toward a concrete next step.

Focusing only on content misses how they feel; focusing only on feelings misses the actual information; focusing only on meaning can misinterpret what they want. By combining all three, you respond in a balanced, respectful, and effective way.
